We spend a lot of time outside exploring nature in Summer. A typical day for us involves either hiking in the woods, or swimming at a nearby lake. Whichever we do, we seem to always collect wildflower bouquets along the way. While the girls are picnicking, or swimming I like to braid wildflower crowns for them.
I am a flower child at heart and I am raising the girls with a love of nature, it is such a blessing to be able to enjoy natures gifts together. As an artist, working with flowers makes me so happy, and I love how it brings us all closer to nature and deepens our respect for earth. Foraged flowers crowns are also a really gentle earth friendly way to adorn and delve into fantasy and imagination play…. children do not really need anything to encourage imagination, but as I look upon the girls skipping along the shore in flower crowns. I feel like I am part of a fairytale.
Our summer days are all the sweeter for ilovegorgeous Bikinis and cover-ups. I love the timeless appeal of woven cotton bikinis and the floral and gingham prints from ilovegorgeous are classic..they really compliment our carefree flower child vibes!

How To Braid A Flower Crown

photo 1 (11)

1. Start by collecting a small bouquet of wildflowers. This crown was made using foraged red clover,
buttercups, daisy fleabane, and cow parsley. I am conscious when collecting that I do not pull up roots and that I leave plenty of flowers on each cluster for the pollinators. I try not to over collect so that there is not any waste. We often leave the crowns behind when go so the flowers can re-seed.

2. Choose six or nine pieces from your collected bunch, and divide it as you would to braid hair. Start braiding the flower stems.

3. As you braid, add another flower to the center before each outer cross over, then cross over to secure the newly added stem. This will give a gradual fullness and length

4. If you want your crown to be extra full, you can add a few flowers to the center each time. If one of your braid lengths is getting short, when it is in the center make note to add a very long stemmed flower into the braid.

5. When your braid is more than long enough to go around a head, stop braiding and tuck the extra pieces into the braid and flowers. You can also use a loose flower stem to help bind it. You might need to remove some of the stemsif it is too bulky.

6. Once you have secured your circlet, if you wish, you can add extra flowers by threading into the braided mass. Now wear your crown and spread the beauty of a flower child. Happy Summer!
